EXPERIENCE
(Profession-Focused) WORK EXPERIENCE
Director/Instructor Of English Programs — Active Cubes Learning Center — Jul 2015–Present
This contract has had me creating and teaching an entire system of English learning content (hundreds of worksheets and curricula) to support elementary through college students.
Private Tutor — Freelance — Jan 2014–Jun 2016
Worked with all ages, though focused on middle school–undergraduate students
Mainly essay writing for college-level students
All subjects for elementary/middle school students
In-class Mentor + Apex Scholars Tutor — Wayne State University — Sep 2013–Apr 2014
The APEX Scholars program offered English comprehension and composition tutoring for "marginalized students" in a special program at WSU. I was tasked with assisting students on an individual basis, engaging with all steps of essay development and refinement, as well as assignment, research, concept and reading comprehension.
After a couple of semesters, I transferred from the WSU APEX Scholars Program to work directly within the WSU English Department as an in-class tutor/mentor/teaching assistant. Responsibilities included addressing the classes at-large, working with individuals/small groups, offering students help with developing analytical, reflective and argumentative essays, understanding content, and general composition support throughout the essay-writing process.
Columnist — AOL’s Patch.Com — Jul 2010–Dec 2011
I was contracted as a freelance columnist by AOL’s Patch.com and wrote and published over 140 pieces for them. I produced feature stories, local government pieces, editorials, reviews, local event coverage, storm chases and aftermath reporting, business spotlights and more. My main focus, however, was writing a parenting column called “Dad Around Town.”
Freelancer — Various Projects — Jan 2010–Present
Private Contracts (e.g., short biography of international professional salsa dancer)
AOL Business Directory listing descriptions & City’s Best bios/profiles of business contestants in local competition
Copywriting (e.g., web content for learning company SkySlate, marketing ads, etc)
PROJECTS & VOLUNTEER WORK
I can never find myself settling, always with numerous projects in the works. Most tend to be artistic in nature and story-focused, or at least especially unique in order to mine experiences for stories, though, often, my projects engage with the community or help in some way. Also, often, they are somewhat Quixotic leaving me reaching well beyond my grasp—but that often leads to the best stories.
Numerous other projects are waiting on the horizon, but I will need a more authoritative degree to pull them off...
Campaign for Governor of Michigan — www.TheGoverNerd.com — 2017–2018
Independent 2018 Michigan Gubernatorial Campaign
Focused on meeting and more intimately discussing issues with strangers in order to create “common ground” legislative models and bill concepts
www.TheGoverNerd.com was used as a place voters could come and request voting research and nonpartisan advice, encouraging voters to vote
